For the fourth straight year, UCF Women’s Basketball is heading to the AAC Tournament Semifinals. The No. 2 seed Knights notched a 65-32 win over the Wichita State Shockers in the quarterfinals on Saturday and could possibly be primed for a second straight NCAA Tournament appearance regardless of the outcome of the next round.
ESPN’s most recent bracketology for women’s basketball had UCF as one of the last four into the tournament, and that position was only buoyed by the win against the Shockers. The Knights made the tournament last year as a No. 12 seed, marking the team’s first appearance since 2011, and were eager to build on that momentum coming into this season. The team did just that, earning its 20th victory of the season on Saturday to make it four straight 20-win campaigns.
While UCF came somewhat back down to earth from its 26-7 record last year, the Knights remained a consistently dangerous team in the AAC behind the stellar play of senior guard Kay Kay Wright, who has averaged 17.8 points and four assists per game. She notched 14 points, two rebounds and an assist on Saturday.
The team overcame a slow start to the year by winning eight of its last nine games to close out the regular season and position itself for a bye in the first round of the AAC Tournament. After the win against Wichita, the Knights will take on the winner of Cincinnati-Memphis tomorrow. The winner of that game will advance to the championship game, where powerhouse UConn will most likely be waiting.
UCF’s game tomorrow is set for 6:30 p.m.
