Due to the effects of Hurricane Irma on Central Florida and the rest of the state, this Saturday’s game between UCF and Georgia Tech has been called off. It’s the second straight week that the Knights have had a game canceled due to the storm.
According to an official release from UCF Athletics, this week’s game has been called due to the need for the university to host hundreds of National Guard members and vehicles. The best area of campus to host the units is around Spectrum Stadium, meaning the venue would be unavailable for a game this weekend.
In addition to the presence of such personnel, it was unclear when players would be able to return to campus for practice. Once last week’s game against Memphis was canceled, a number of players joined their families for the storm. With campus not fully operational until at least Thursday, preparation time for a potential matchup with Georgia Tech would have been short to begin with.
Unless either of the two games are made up, UCF (1-0) will play a 10-game regular season schedule this fall. Once the team regroups, focus will shift to its next opponent. The Knights are set to travel north to face Maryland (2-0) on Sept. 23. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m.
